Driving in Dubrovnik – What You Actually Need to Know

Driving in Dubrovnik – What You Actually Need to Know

If you’re thinking about renting a car in Dubrovnik, the real answer is simple – it depends on your plan.
Dubrovnik isn’t the kind of place where you just take a car and use it all the time. In some situations, it can actually make your stay more stressful instead of easier.

🚧 Old Town traffic restrictions (important)

From April 1st, the special traffic regulation zone around the Old Town is active again.
In practice, this means you can’t freely drive around the Old Town area. Access is restricted and fines are possible. What often catches visitors off guard is that Google Maps can still guide you into those zones. If you’re not completely sure where you’re going, it’s best to avoid driving anywhere near the Old Town.
If you happen to find yourself heading toward the Special Traffic Regulation Zone, the video at the link below shows where to turn in order to avoid a traffic violation and fine.

Do you actually need a car within Dubrovnik city?

Short answer: not necessarily.
If you’re staying within Dubrovnik city limits, especially near the Old Town, having a car is usually more of a hassle than a benefit. Parking is limited, expensive, and during the season often hard to find.
Most visitors manage perfectly fine using public buses, Uber or simply walking. Old Town Dubrovnik is compact and easy to get around without a car. If you do not have secured parking, we recommend avoiding driving into the area.

Where a car actually makes sense

The moment you leave the city, everything changes.
This is where having a car becomes a really good idea. You’re no longer tied to bus schedules and you can explore at your own pace.
Places like Župa Dubrovačka (Mlini, Srebreno), Cavtat, Konavle, Zaton and Orašac are much easier and more enjoyable to visit by car. The same goes for coastal drives and smaller beaches that are harder to reach otherwise.
If you want to go a bit further, a car gives you the freedom to plan day trips to Pelješac, Korčula, Montenegro, or even Mostar, Međugorje and Kravice waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
That’s usually the part of the trip people remember the most.

The easiest way to plan it

The simplest way to do it is to combine both options.
Stay car-free while you’re in Dubrovnik, and then rent a car for 1 to 3 days when you want to explore outside the city.
This way you avoid the stress in the city, but still get the full experience of the region.
